A Tsunami Advisory has been issued for Newport Beach due to the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Japan.

A Tsunami Advisory means that a Tsunami capable of producing strong currents or wave dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected. Significant widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

The Beaches are currently closed until further notice. The estimated arrival of any wave action is expected around 8:00 a.m. on March 11. Lifeguards, Police, Firefighters and other safety officials will open the beaches once it is determined to be safe.

Evacuation from low lying areas is not necessary at this time, but please stay out of the water and off the beaches. This message will be updated if the situation warrants.

OC Tsunami Hotline: 714-628-7085.
